The Influence on hrmusic.tv

A few weeks ago when The Influence played at The Jewish Mother, a dude from HamptonRoadsMusic.tv showed up and filmed them. Well, that video is now available here: http://www.hamptonroadsmusic.tv/UAN/showin.html The band Ki Theory that opened for them is also on the video, ironically enough The Influence opens for them on it, weird. The dude didn’t bring another camera man so he conscribed me to use one of his cameras. Any time on The Influence part where it goes to the higher, straight on view (not the still one) that’s me. I don’t think he used it enough. Actually, Travis was shooting too with our camera and the guy was supposed to give us his stuff so we could make a nice video or two for the band, but nothing’s come of that. Anyway, like 90% of Ki Theory’s part of the video is what I shot, the side view where he’s straight on when he’s playing the keyboard. I don’t know why they made it all black and white and shit, becasue it looked awesome with the worklights the band set up, but whatever. I’m not the expert.

I’m the guy who edited the video, I’m Doug Dye, producer for Up All Night. You shot some great stuff. and I contacted Matt last night about giving you our footage.

The problem with the Jewish Mother (and the reason I had a lot of black and white stuff there) is that there’s never enough light, so unless you use some tricks, everything comes out grainy as hell. A little grain sometimes is OK, but 1/2 hour of it, well, it’s just too much. You’ll see when you get the footage.

As far as “opening”, that’s always a weird problem on shows like ours. The Influence is the featured band, so we want to put them on right in the front of the show, so I guess you could say that they “opened” for Ki Theory, but it would’ve also been strange to feature The Influence, but have our only video from Ki Theory go on first…

Anyway, you guys were great to Eric that night. He only had himself because we’d just shot Chasing Corona the night before with a full crew, so he was stuck shooting the band by himself. Anyway, your help was instrumental, Eric told me that he couldn’t have done it without your help.

Hey Doug, thanks for posting! I really appreicate you getting on here and clearing that stuff up for me. I really didn’t mean to bash the video in any way-I enjoyed it a lot and I’ve enjoyed all the other videos on your site. At the end of the day I’m just a writer and don’t know all the ins and outs of how to make a good video-which you obviously do. But I definitely enjoyed the video; it was very cool seeing the stuff of Ki Theory that I shot. I thought it looked good while I was doing it, even though there was no sort of artistry involved, and you guys made it look great. Thanks again, I’ll keep checking the site.

Glad I got the chance to clear things up. Lighting has been the biggest problem we’ve faced in the first season of the show. Local clubs are just too DARK to get good footage! Next season we’re bringing out extra lights for On Location shoots.

You really did a good job, I credited you on the Launch Page. I’d love to shoot The Influence with our whole crew in a good lighting situation, let me know if the opportunity presents itself.

Let me know how our footage works out for you.

    Doug
